The lake, a mid sized lake, is split between two municipalities, Lake of Bays and Huntsville, both within the District of Muskoka. There are two large islands on the lake – Hills and Wolf Island. Though the area surrounding the lake is primarily residential use, Pen Lake is home to a few resorts, including world famous Deerhurst Resort, the location of the the 2010 G8 Summit. Hidden Valley is located at the north end of the lake offering golf and downhill skiing.

In 1888 a mile long canal was excavated, at the cost of $25,000, between Fairy and Pen lake to allow the large steamships which serviced the lakes at the time the ability to travel between the two lakes. Water levels in the lake are controlled at two points, the first at the canal, and the second point at the outlet of Fairy Lake. Access the lake from Hwy 60 or North Portage Road. There is a public boat launch at Hwy 60 and Limberlost Road and a swimming beach at the bay near Hillside.
