The Almaguin Highlands are located just north of Muskoka, in the eastern part of the District of Parry Sound. There are two Provincial Parks within the Almaguin boundaries: Mikisew Provincial Park, and Restoule Provincial Park. The highlands serve as a western gate to Algonquin Provincial Park. The area is dotted with beautiful clear lakes, and the Magnetawan River runs east – west through the middle, making it a popular destination for cottagers. With plenty of trails, fishing, winter sports, including The Annual Kearney’s Dog Sled Race the largest dog sled race in Ontario, 6 museums and much more, you’ll find something to do in Almaguin. Muskoka, Haliburton and the Parry Sound District is considered part of Ontario’s cottage country region. The district is commonly divided into two subregions; West Parry Sound and East Parry Sound. Its boundaries are District of Muskoka to the south, the Sudbury District to the north-northwest, the French River and Lake Nipissing in the north, Nipissing District and North Bay in the north and east and parts of Algonquin Park in the northeast.
